These lenticular, or lens-shaped clouds usually form over the top of a mountain. Occasionally the updrafts over a towering cumulus will give the same effect as a solid object (mountain) then the cross flow at the level of the top of the cloud causes the formation of the altocumulus standing lenticular clouds.
