Black Crowned Night Heron
John Lister
This is a young bird. As they grow older, the nice pattern on the wings is replaced with a dull grey. I prefer this pattern though. Shot from a kayak yesterday near Ottawa, Canada

The Egret has a seven foot wingspan and flies with it's neck curved. They visit my area of Canada only for a couple of months late each summer.

Waiting for Fish

Title: Waiting for Fish
Country: Canada
Exif: 1/2000 sec, f5.6, ISO200, 300mm
A great blue heron waits in the water for fish to catch.

Balancing Act
John Lister
What looks like a bird balancing on it's beak is actually an Arctic Tern diving into the water.

What should I do today?
John Lister
A great blue heron appears to be deep in thought. Actually he was fishing and now is contemplating the wisdom in staying so close to an approaching kayak. (me) The wind blew me silently closer until I was quite close.

The Lonely Tern
John Lister
I submitted a photo of this same bird (a tern) on the same piece of wood yesterday. Of course, I don't really know if it's the same bird, but considering he is the only tern in the area, it seems like he sits here waiting to catch fish. I was surprised to see him again, and once more, I was able to get very close without him flying away.

A tern for the best
John Lister
This was shot on a calm day. The tern was soaring overhead, and would dive into and beneath the water and most times would come up with a fish in his beak. They move fast and it's a challenge to keep them in focus and in the viewfinder.

A tern for the worst
John Lister
A common tern, facing the wind and with his feathers all ruffled. It's not a good day to fish. The water has ripples and it makes it hard to see. Normally these birds soar high above, looking down into the water, then swoop down to catch their fish. I was only about six feet from this bird, I had to zoom my telephoto lens all the way in for a change!

Back off, Jack!
John Lister
A Great Blue Heron gets a bit too close to a Red-Winged Blackbird's nest, and the blackbird quickly chases the much larger bird away. Keep in mind the wingspan of a red-winged blackbird is just over a foot, and the Great Blue Heron's is six feet! I think the blackbird managed to hitch a ride for a moment!

The Beach.
Janey (editor)
It was road trip time and I headed towards the west side of the state. To see Lake Michigan in all her splendiferous glory. I was not disappointed! There's a saying in Michigan: "There's no sunset like a Lake Michigan sunset!" I wanted to see what the fuss was all about. Mere words cannot describe a sunset over Lake Michigan. I wished I could have stayed longer. I'll be back.

The Birds

This was just a quick shot while shooting the whales, but when I got home something really drew me to it. I loved the almost 3D feel. Thousands of birds are in the sky and on the water looking for what the whales stir up as they breach.
