St Hilda’s Church on the Hartlepool Headland is one of the most important churches in the north of England, believed to be on the site of the monastery where Hilda was abbess in the 7th century. She later went on to found Whitby Abbey.

Just learning my Sony Alpha 58 DSLR, while departing Venice on an eastern Mediterranean Sea cruise. Not knowing better, used full auto to take this shot, which did well replicating the brilliant topaz blue lighting of the yacht's namesake jewel, "Topaz." Later, discovered an article from an on line magazine, American Horsepower, I think, which listed this as one of the 10 most expensive private yachts in service about 2010 and as being own by a German industrialist.

CALA GALA : Arte Americas 25th Annual Dia De Los Muertos Celebration held in Downtown Fresno, California. Fresno is home to a large population of Mexican Americans which bring rich cultural celebrations from Mexico to the Central Valley of California. Dia De Los Muertos is a beautiful and colorful celebration that honors family members who have passed.

This picture was taken during the Candlelight Procession from Peeve' Public House in the Fulton Mall to Arte Americas. The trio were part of the Folklorico dancers that performed in front of Peeves.

It was an evening filled with Ballet Folklorico, painted faces, food, art and music.

The sight filled the northern sky; the immensity of it was scarcely conceivable. As if from Heaven itself, great curtains of delicate light hung and trembled. Pale green and rose-pink, and as transparent as the most fragile fabric, and at the bottom edge a profound fiery crimson like the fires of Hell, they swung and shimmered loosely with more grace than the most skillful dancer.

So you plan a shot, you've thought about for ages. Staying on a small island called the Calf of Man, helping with Voluntary work. Night time shot, M, tripod, headlight, redlight, remote etc..Full Moon ordered, and it came out from behind a bank of clouds at just the right time. Unfortunately, because of the exposed nature of lighthouses it was extremely windy. Had to put my weight on the tripod to hold steady. Despite that, the stars do look a tad blurred. I know this is not a perfect picture, but good practice, in pitch darkness. Nothing is ever perfect :)

A pre-dawn scene on Congress Street in Austin, Texas. The Capitol Dome looms in the background with an ominous red glow, while the streets are lit only by the glow of headlights. Red and green traffic lights, and an array of white "christmas" lights gently dot the canvas of this quiet, peaceful scene.

Thinking of the cartoon series, "Gargoyles" and movie, "Hunchback of Notre Dame", this night shot made me think of gargoyles as living beings perched between heaven and earth to rescue mankind from itself. This was taken with a Sony Alpha58 DSLR, during a pre-cruise night walk near the University of Venice and Basilica Maria d' Salut, Basilica of Praise to Saint Mary, while trying to learn the capabilities of a new tech-toy. Found the in camera HDR process could produce interesting low light results.

Our little town of Jal, NM lost power last night for 6 hours. It gave me the opportunity to practice my nighttime long exposure photography and capture light trails from the curious members of the community that ventured out to see just how much of the town was without power. The red glow you see in the pictures is from the flare of the gasoline refinery northeast of town, which fortunately for us, was burning bright and was enhanced by cloud cover. Photo is unedited, except to add my watermark in Photoshop.

This is the Milkyway over Mount Shuksan on Picture lake. We had started at the top of Baker, but quickly realized that the Milkyway would be almost directly over the mountain. We grabed our gear and headed to the lake. There were a few clouds surounding the mountain. We decided to wait it out, and eventually the clouds began to clear. As I stood there looking around, all I could see was the darkness of the night. It was so quite, the only thing you heard was silence. It almost gave me an erry feeling being out there. But it was also so peaceful. Sometimes we get caught up in trying to get the shot, we foreget to enjoy the moment. So, next time you are out shooting at night.. take a moment and listen to the night.

Needed my tripod as have some motion blur on the lit windows and the edges of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda.
Originally built in 652 during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), it functioned to collect Buddhist materials that were taken from India by the hierarch Xuanzang.
First built to a height of 60 meters (197 feet) with five stories, it is now 64.5 meters (211.6 feet) high with an additional two stories. It was said that after that addition came the saying-'Saving a life exceeds building a seven-storied pagoda'. Externally it looks like a square cone, simple but grand and it is a masterpiece of Buddhist construction. Built of brick, its structure is very firm. Inside the pagoda, stairs twist up so that visitors can climb and overlook the panorama of the city from the arch-shaped doors on four sides of each storey. On the walls are engraved fine statues of Buddha by the renowned artist Yan Liben of the Tang Dynasty. Steles by noted calligraphers also grace the pagoda.
According to ancient stories of Buddhists, there were two branches, for one of which eating meat was not a taboo. One day, they couldn't find meat to buy. Upon seeing a group of big wild geese flying by, a monk said to himself: 'Today we have no meat. I hope the merciful Bodhisattva will give us some.' At that very moment, the leading wild goose broke its wings and fell to the ground. All the monks were startled and believed that Bodhisattva showed his spirit to order them to be more pious. They established a pagoda where the wild goose fell and stopped eating meat. Hence its name.

The Auroras put on a show last night. It was cold up on that mountain, but so worth it. Elk were still bugling in the distance. Taken in Central Washington State.

Frost is but slender weeks away,
Tonight the sunset glow will stay,
Swing to the north and burn up higher
And Northern Lights wall earth with fire.
Nothing is lost yet, nothing broken,
And yet the cold blue word is spoken:
Say goodbye to the sun.
The days of love and leaves are done.

This was taken at Sparks Lake, Oregon. It was the most beautiful night I had seen in a while. There was not a cloud in the sky, and there seemed to be a million stars out. As we stood on the rocks, we noticed a campfire across the way. I thought to myself, what a beautiful night to be camping beneath the stars. Their fire seemed to make the trees glow with a brilliant orange. What an incredible night this turned out to be. We were even blessed to see the longest shooting start we had ever seeen. This is taken from the roof terrace of a restaurant at the top of The Dancing House. The main building in the skyline is Prague Castle, the taller building within it is St Vitus's Cathedral. It's a very different type of castle to the British castles I'm used to. To the far left is a thin structure that is the Observation Tower. It was modelled on the Eiffel Tower but approximately a quarter of the size at 210 feet tall.

It was the perfect evening!!

A pre-dawn scene on Congress Street in Austin, Texas. The Capitol Dome looms in the background with an ominous red glow, while the streets are lit only by the glow of headlights. Just learning my Sony Alpha 58 DSLR, while departing Venice on an eastern Mediterranean Sea cruise. Not knowing better, used full auto to take this shot, which did well replicating the brilliant topaz blue lighting of the yacht's namesake jewel, "Topaz." This is taken from the roof terrace of a restaurant at the top of The Dancing House.

This is an in camera HDR type process, which gave results better than my novice efforts.
