Looking for advice: when using long exposure to shoot waterfalls, rushing water etc, where do you place the focus? Even when shooting f22 with center focus, many of my shots look out of focus. How do I nail focus on these? Thanks for the help!

This little picture was taken at Salmon Valley, British Columbia on New Years Eve. The weather was 23 degrees below 0 ...but having a thermos full of coffee and baileys kept me warm.

ISO - 500, F1.8, 13" (which seemed like a really long time while it was cold out)

I was pleased to get this result at our local country club on 4th of July 2015. The reflection of the fireworks and the remnants of the sunset behind give it such an awesome affect! I will have to search down the EXIF, can't believe it isn't attached to the image! UGH

The Auroras put on a show last night. It was cold up on that mountain, but so worth it. Elk were still bugling in the distance. Taken in Central Washington State.

Frost is but slender weeks away,
Tonight the sunset glow will stay,
Swing to the north and burn up higher
And Northern Lights wall earth with fire.
Nothing is lost yet, nothing broken,
And yet the cold blue word is spoken:
Say goodbye to the sun.
The days of love and leaves are done.

The movement, tracking a beautiful ghost of a girl.

I was concerned that while I loved this image it was hard to understand, then my almost two year old climbed up in my lap and said her name.

Taken on October 21, 2015. A severe thunderstorm just west of Jal heading Northeast...so towards me. Looking south to show the clear night sky over Jal on the left with the storm clouds on the right. Those weird tall things on the left side are the pieces of the sculpture north of town (You can drive right up to it).

This is a 4 image stack of lightning over the town of Jal. I know the horizon looks crooked, but it's actually a hill. The levels on the tripod were perfect.

Our little town of Jal, NM lost power last night for 6 hours. It gave me the opportunity to practice my nighttime long exposure photography and capture light trails from the curious members of the community that ventured out to see just how much of the town was without power. The red glow you see in the pictures is from the flare of the gasoline refinery northeast of town, which fortunately for us, was burning bright and was enhanced by cloud cover. Photo is unedited, except to add my watermark in Photoshop.

The sight filled the northern sky; the immensity of it was scarcely conceivable. As if from Heaven itself, great curtains of delicate light hung and trembled. Pale green and rose-pink, and as transparent as the most fragile fabric, and at the bottom edge a profound fiery crimson like the fires of Hell, they swung and shimmered loosely with more grace than the most skillful dancer.

Self portrait conceptualizing an ideal afterlife drifting the high seas remembering and reliving the best of times with my loved ones ...

Execution of this shot was pretty straightforward ... set the self-timer on the camera and then got into position, ducking out of the frame after 1 second of a 2 second exposure ... Except the wind was bad enough that I couldn't actually hear the shutter open, so I just had to count ...

This is Falling Branch AKA Kilgore falls. located in Rock state park in Maryland! The hike to the 2nd highest free falling waterfall in the state is probably one of the easiest hikes i have ever done.less than a mile and well worth every step! Be careful in winter the trail does ice over! This is a fall that cane and should be enjoyed every season!

Taken during a night shoot on Fuerteventura, this is the Tefia windmill lined up with a fantastic Milky Way show. The island is now a UNESCO Dark Skies destination, so the light pollution is minimal leading to the Milky Way easily being visible by the naked eye.

Playing around with long exposure and bubbles, hand held so I wasn't really planning on keeping them I just wanted to know what a longer exposure would do to bubbles. And then I fell in love with the shot. To me, this is a perfect description of life with my son.
